PS21 Presents Lincoln Mayorga: Chopin and Candlelight
A performance of Chopin’s Preludes and readings from Chopin’s and George Sand’s letters
[CHATHAM, NY] – PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century presents a musical and dramatic performance that brings new life and understanding to Poland’s greatest composer, Frédéric Chopin. Brilliant pianist, arranger, producer, and composer Lincoln Mayorga will perform Chopin’s Twenty-six Preludes, a piece known for its beauty and variety. Actors Nancy Rothman and Martin Anderson will read from the correspondence and diaries of the composer and his lover, George Sand. The performance will be held Sunday, July 16 at 2:00pm under The Tent at PS21, located at 2980 Route 66 in the town of Chatham.
“I consider Chopin my ‘desert island composer,” Lincoln Mayorga said. “If I had to choose the music of just one composer to take with me on a desert island, it would be Chopin. He cared for no other instrument the way he loved and identified with the piano. Chopin’s music is not intellectual, It’s direct emotional appeal. He speaks directly from his heart to ours.”
The novelist George Sand was introduced to Chopin by Franz Liszt. At first, the composer was repulsed by the cigar smoking, trouser wearing novelist, but that feeling quickly turned to fascination. The very next year, Chopin and Sand spent three months together in Majorca, where she nursed and protected the ill composer, giving him the time and strength to complete the preludes in each of the major and minor keys.
Lincoln Mayorga, an East Chatham resident since 1989, began his career as a classically trained pianist and enjoyed a busy studio career in Hollywood. As staff pianist for Walt Disney Studios, he contributed to the motion picture soundtracks of Chinatown, Pete’s Dragon, and Ragtime. He made many recordings with Johnny Mathis, Barbra Streisand, Mel Torme, Phil Ochs, Andy Williams, Frank Zappa, Quincy Jones, and many others.
Nancy Rothman has acted on stages in NYC, regionally and abroad, as well as on film, television and radio. Her past credits include Tribe, Antigone, The Lover, Look Back In Anger, The Cherry Orchard, and many others. Martin Anderson is a Brooklyn-based actor, writer, director and filmmaker.
