Stroszek (1977, Germany, 115 min)
Bruno Stroszek, a luckless ex-con and street musician in Berlin, falls for a prostitute (Eva Mattes) and the two decide to emigrate to the U.S. to escape thugs who are after Eva. Joined by their eccentric neighbor, they make it to America where they end up living in a trailer in rural Wisconsin.
“Among other things, Mr. Herzog visually dazzles us while he’s pulling the rug from under our feet.” – Vince Canby, New York Times
“Stroszek is part moral tale and part absurdist comedy.” – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader
“We watch with a kind of fascination, because Herzog cuts loose from narrative and follows his characters through the relentless logic of their adventure.” – Roger Ebert
