PS21 Presents The Mettawee River Theatre Company’s Production of “Before the Sun and Moon”
A Korean Folktale Incorporating Masks, Puppets, and more
[CHATHAM, NY] PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century presents The Mettawee River Theatre Company’s production of “Before the Sun and Moon” Wednesday, July 26 at 8:00 pm. The production incorporates masks, puppets, music, and movement to tell the Korean folktale of a husband and wife who discover the power of love through a series of wild adventures. The performance will take place at the Tent at PS21, located at 2980 Route 66 in the town of Chatham.
“For more than 40 years the Mettawee River Theatre Company has been dramatizing myths, folktales, and legends from diverse cultures,” said PS21 Founder Judy Grunberg. “We present this special performance as a gift to our community.”
BEFORE THE SUN AND MOON is drawn from an ancient Korean folktale, in which a husband and wife discover the power of love and devotion through a series of wild adventures, finding clever solutions to unexpected and outrageous challenges.
Artistic Director Ralph Lee is a RENOWNED puppet-maker. He has created masks, unusual props, puppets, and other larger-than-life figures for theater and dance companies, including the New York Shakespeare Festival, Lincoln Center Repertory Theatre, Saturday Night Live, and many others. In 1996 Lee received the 1996 Dance Theatre Workshop Bessie Award for “sustained achievement as a mask maker and theatre designer without equal.”
Lee also received 2003 Guggenheim Fellowship in Drama. Two of his Mettawee productions have been honored with American Theatre Wing Design Awards. Under Mr. Lee’s direction, Mettawee has also received a 1991 Village Voice OBIE Award and two Citations for Excellence from UNIMA, the international puppetry organization. Additional awards to Mr. Lee include a 1996 Dance Theatre Workshop Bessie Award and a 1996 New York State Governor’s Arts Award in recognition of his many contributions to the artistic and cultural life of New York State. In 1999 Ralph received an award for “excellence in theater” from the New England Theater Conference.
The Mettawee River Theatre Company’s production of “Before the Sun and Moon” will take place on Wednesday, July 26, at 8:00 pm.
