PS21 Opening Night Celebration: Alicia Svigals’ Klezmer Fiddle Express

[CHATHAM, NY] PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century kicks off its summer season on Saturday, July 15 at 8:00 pm with an Opening Night Celebration featuring Alicia Svigals’ Klezmer Fiddle Express. Founder of the Grammy-winning Klezmatics folk band, Svigals is credited with contributing to the widespread revival of klezmer music. The performance takes place under PS21’s beautiful saddlespan tent set in an apple orchard just a mile north of the charming village of Chatham, NY.

Considered one of the world’s leading Klezmer fiddlers, Svigals has collaborated with artists ranging from Itzhak Perlman to Led Zeppelin, has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, MTV, PBS’ Great Performances, NPR’s Prairie Home Companion, and can be heard on multiple film and television scores. Svigals. For this performance, she will be joined by accordionist Lauren Brody and double bassist Brian Glassman.

Svigals’ dazzling style of playing encourages audiences to participate in the lively, expressive music by dancing, singing, and clapping. “We’re the Jewish equivalent of a sizzling hoedown!” Svigals said. “I wish for the audience to have a musical and spiritual experience. I’d like them to leave feeling like they spent time in a magical, faraway place.”

Klezmer came to the U.S. with the wave of Jewish immigration at the turn of the 20th century, and was revived in the 1960s-70s. It is the traditional music of Eastern Europe’s Jewish community that began in the Middle Ages. It incorporates cantorial melody, ancient folk tunes, Yiddish poetry, Hebraic ritual, and Greek and Ottoman influences. Svigals’ program is both instrumental music and song, ancient and new.

Alicia Svigals’ Klezmer Fiddle Express will perform on Saturday, July 15 at 8:00pm. Tickets are $35 general admission, $30 for PS21 members, and $18 for students (school ID required for college students). Tickets can be purchased at www.ps21chatham.org, by calling 1-800-838-3006, or at the door until the show sells out.
