Grâce à la Belle Danse
Photographs by PS21 photography intern Amara Engel
Chatham High School senior Amara Engel’s photography exhibit, Grâce à la Belle Danse, will open at the Joyce Goldstein Gallery with a reception for the artist On March 10, 2017 from 5pm to 8 pm. The exhibit will be on view in the Gallery for the weekends of March 10-12 and March 16-18. The Gallery is located at 16 Main Street in the village of Chatham.
Amara Engel was PS21’s high school photography intern for the summer of 2016. She photographed the dance companies who performed at PS21, including RIOULT Dance NY, The Chase Brock Experience, Dance Heginbotham, and Parsons Dance. For the Internship Program, now in its second year, Amara was mentored by photographer David Lee, and Chatham High School teacher and Arts Honor Society Mentor Jude Harrigan.
Every year this exciting and creatively challenging program grants a high school student the opportunity to expand their artistic skills by photographing dancers in rehearsal and in performance on the PS21 stage.
Amara says she was “fortunate to be able to photograph the dance troupes who performed in August at PS21.” For the current exhibit, Amara focused on the dancers’ emotions and body movement and how they connected with nature. She said, “I have always been a keen observer of nature. When I observed and photographed the dance companies that performed at PS21 I could see the beauty of dance and nature intertwine in the movements of color. I loved the way they were able to incorporate color into their dances.”
Amara attended the Capital District BOCES Deaf and Hard of Hearing program in Guilderland from the time she was a toddler until seventh grade, when she made the choice to attend school in Chatham High School. Amara’s earliest memories are of trying to document the world around her through photography – from an early age she had a camera at her side.
The PS21 Photography Internship program is made possible in part by Hudson River Bank & Trust Co. Foundation, Chatham High School Art Department, Joyce Goldstein Gallery, and PS21 members.
