Summer Workshops at PS21 for Kids
Dance and Theater Arts Programs
[CHATHAM, NY] – This summer, PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century offers five diverse dance and theater workshops just for kids. Pre-registration is required for all workshops. For information or to register go to ps21chatham.org or call PS21 at 518-392-6121.
“An important aspect our mission is to reach as many young people as possible and expose them to the joy and freedom that comes from sharing experiences in the performing arts,” said PS21 President Judy Grunberg. “To that end, we offer a variety of workshops to children and teens led by professional performers who love working with young people.”
WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS
West African Dance and Drum Workshop
August 14-18, 8:30 am-1:00 pm
For all children ages 9-18. Professional dancer Jamal Jackson and drummer Frank Malloy IV teach students traditional dance and drumming from Mali, culminating in a public performance on the PS21 stage as part of the Just for Fun series. Perfect Ten and PS21 started this program in 2013. This year Perfect Ten will host the first four days in the Hudson Library’s community room. Jackson is talented at unifying and inspiring a diverse group of children and teens. Students make their own healthy lunches as part of the program. Sliding scale $50 to $250. (lunch is included) Scholarships are available.
Theater Arts & Playwriting Workshops
July 10- August 11, Mondays and Wednesdays
For all children ages 5-12. NYS Certified Theater Arts Teacher Emilia Teasdale teaches theater and playwriting skills at Chatham Kids Club after school program, culminating with a performance of the students’ own work on the PS21 stage. Contact Chatham Kids Club at 518-392-9848 to register.
Theater Arts Intensive Workshop
August 7-10, 8:30 am-1:00 pm
For children ages 8-13. Actors Eddie Allen and Nancy Rothman teach a 4-day intensive in theater improvisation, mime, recitation, and other performance skills. The workshop, which will be held at the PS21 Barn Studio, will emphasize team building and imagination. On the last day of the workshop, the students perform improvised stories and lead improv games for parents and friends. Sliding scale $50 to $200. Scholarships are available.
Parsons Dance Workshops
July 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28. 10:00 am-11:30 am
For youth ages 12-18. Modern Dance classes with the acclaimed Parsons Dance company are designed for students of all levels. For the third year in a row students join the company to learn the Parsons style of movement through fun combinations set to popular music. This workshop will be held at the Barn Studio, 3016 Route 66, Chatham. Six sessions $60, one session $15
Contemporary Tap Dance Workshops
August 10, 11, 12. 10:00 am-11:30 am
For youth ages 12 -18. Taught by the Caleb Teicher and Company dancers, who are some of the most dynamic tap dancers working today. The New Yorker called Teicher “among the more promising figures in tap dance.” This workshop will be held on the stage at The Tent at PS21. Three sessions $30, one session $15
