A roving performance installation on PS21’s pathways by Processional Arts Workshop

The culmination of two weeks of exploratory workshops led by Processional Arts Workshop, Invisible Cities invites visitors to explore a fantastical realm of imagined cities across our campus, with pageant puppets and performing objects transforming PS21’s pathways into a shifting landscape of animated architectural follies. Guided by poetic fragments, found sounds, and unreliable maps, visitors encounter cities at random, trying to make sense of a once-familiar world that seems to fade, with each step, into an elusive, half-remembered dream.

A PS21 CREATIVE RESIDENCY

IN RESIDENCY FROM JULY 20–29

PAW brought Invisible Cities to life during two weeks of community workshops in which participants collaborated to create and embody their own imagined cities as puppets, body extensions and performing objects, transforming PS21’s surrounding pathways into a shifting landscape of ambulatory architectural follies. Two weeks of community workshops inspired by Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities led by Processional Arts Workshop culminated in a procession of imagined, wearable cities that led into a performance of Save the Last Dance for Me, Alessandro Sciarroni’s revival, with performances and workshops, of the nearly lost Bolognese courtship dance, the Polka Chinata. All events were free of charge.
