2023 RESIDENCIES
The 2023 Next Festival of Emerging Artists. A 10-day residency for string players: lessons, coaching, open rehearsals, and free community performances and workshops. Residency from May 25–June 3
Susie Ibarra & The Rhythm In Nature Residency for 22 artists presented by Pilipinx composer, percussionist and sound artist Susie Ibarra. The Residency featured field recording workshops each morning listening on the river and with the forest birds on the PS21 campus led by Ibarra and multi-instrumentalist, field recordist, and sound engineer Jake Landau. Ibarra taught drum and gong workshops each day focused on learning, interpreting, and playing rhythms of bird songs and the rhythmic equations of waves in water. Residency from July 15-19
Processional Arts Workshop. PAW brought Invisible Cities to life during two weeks of community workshops in which participants collaborated to create and embody their own imagined cities as puppets, body extensions and performing objects, transforming PS21’s surrounding pathways into a shifting landscape of ambulatory architectural follies. Two weeks of community workshops inspired by Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities led by Processional Arts Workshop. Residency from July 20-29
Amoukanama Circus. Working with urban youth organizations and community residents to introduce their non-western artistic concepts and practices. Their performance FA is part of PS21 PATHWAYS and will be co-presented with the Town of Chatham on Crellin Park Day. Residency from August 18–20
Wanjiru Kamuyu was in residency at PS21 and conducted free workshops in Hudson at Kite’s Nest. Her practice brings to life emotional stories of immigration, blending different dance styles with visceral memories. Residency from October 2-8
Sourcières. French choreographer Anne Collod explores the work of dance pioneers Anna Halprin, Simone Forti, and Trisha Brown to develop new relationships to our surroundings and identities. The new choreography for three performers will unfold in PS21’s unspoiled and landscaped spaces. Residency from October 17-25
The Civilians, celebrated U.S. investigative theater company developing Sex Variants 1941, based on Dr. George Henry’s interviews and life histories of LBGTQIAP+ Americans in thec1930s. Written and directed by artistic director Steve Cosson, in collaboration with Colombian-American media artist Jessica Mitrani and music director Ada Westfall, a transwoman actor and musician. Residency from December 11–17
