About pathways
Multidisciplinary and participatory, PATHWAYS is our series of free and low-cost workshops, classes, installations, and immersive performances offered beyond the PS21 main stage—across our campus, in nature, and in the community. PATHWAYS resides at the intersection of nature and the arts, presenting site-specific performances and encounters embedded in and responsive to the PS21 landscape, theater, and beyond. Throughout our region, PATHWAYS brings visionary international artists directly to communities with programs in schools, libraries, city parks, village streets, farms, assisted living facilities, and parking lots. Creative placemaking at its core, PATHWAYS fosters collaboration between PS21 and more than two dozen regional and community groups, including the Town of Chatham, sustaining cultural life and strengthening communities.
Through our own programming and in partnership with local organizations, PATHWAYS has emerged as the linchpin of PS21’s activities, fostering collaboration among community groups. These partnerships help to bridge the accessibility divide that often discourages residents from enjoying the cultural and intellectual richness of the performing arts—as participants as well as spectators. PATHWAYS programs are engaging, accessible, participatory, and welcoming, designed for all ages.
Across PS21’s rich programming spectrum, we strive to offer access to all regardless of their socioeconomic situation, to free innovative work from the confines of the proscenium stage, and, through our partnerships with local organizations, cities, and towns, to bring performance and cultural experience to where people are.
Season-long creative engagement with the grounds includes open rehearsals with visiting artists, self-guided ecology walks, and StoryWalk, a collaboration between PS21 and the Columbia Land Conservancy. Site-specific art installations include James Casebere’s Solo Pavilion for Two or Three, an architectural sculpture that interrogates the delicate balancing act between the human need for shelter and our obligation to preserve the landscape, and Silda Wall Spitzer and Tim Jones’ Dandelions installed in PS21’s meadow in 2023.

PATHWAYS Performances
PATHWAYS is an ongoing series of free or pay-as-you-wish performances, participatory events, and encounters for the whole family. Presented on the PS21 grounds and in communities throughout the region, PATHWAYS programs are accessible and welcoming, balancing our commitments to the arts, conservation, and community. Artist Workshops
Artist Workshops are open-level classes and engagements with visiting artists including choreographers, dancers, performers, and members of leading international and national companies held in our Pavilion Theater and Dance Barn, on the PS21 grounds, and in the community. Open Trails
Explore PS21’s fields and trails and learn about environmental stewardship. PATHWAYS invites the community to learn about PS21’s open spaces through self-directed activities created in partnership with neighboring organizations, with a focus on environmental stewardship. From sunrise to sunset every day all are welcome to explore our 100 acres of meadows, woodlands, and trails and to discover our natural setting, encounter wildlife, visit installations, and catch creative artists in action.
