PS21’s main facility, the Pavilion Theater, is a 325-seat open-air proscenium stage protected by a pavilion roof. Its retractable risers allow for flexible seating configurations, including in-the-round performance and interactive, mobile productions, as well as traditional raked seating configurations sheltered by the theater’s large, sweeping roof. Our commitments are incorporated into the design of our new theater and the surrounding grounds: open, inviting, and optimized for the public’s enjoyment and to encourage citizen expression and participation.

Designed by architect Evan Stoller, our Pavilion Theater is a modern green-energy marvel. Learn more about PS21’s unique and breathtaking main building and the architect behind it.

In the colder months, the proscenium doors close and seal, creating an intimate 100-seat black box theater on what was before the stage. The Black Box Theater is geothermally heated, with a riser system easily reconfigured to accommodate various types of performances, allowing for year round performances to take place at PS21. The Black Box space is also a capable sound stage, able to be repurposed for audio and video recording, rehearsals, and workshops.

The PS21 Dance Barn is a renovated nineteenth-century structure, charmingly preserved and upgraded with a sprung dance floor. A short walk from the Pavilion and Black Box Theater across our grounds, the Dance Barn hosts workshops and small scale performances, and also serves as a rehearsal space for resident artists. Its double doors provide natural cross ventilation.

PS21 has two houses on the the campus which allow us to offer accommodations for artists in residences and performing companies. One is a large farmhouse that sleeps up to 16, while the other is a smaller duplex located at the entrance to the PS21 campus. Their bucolic natural setting and rustic coziness provide a rich environment for rest and focus, allowing artists to inhabit PS21 for multi-day residencies, fostering deep creative engagement with the grounds and unencumbered creativity.

Throughout the year, from sunrise to sunset, all are welcome to explore PS21’s 100 acres of meadows, woodlands, apple orchards, and trails—open to the public every day—at their own pace. Encounters with artists undertaking creative practice or animals nestled among installations are among the range of experiences to be expected. Ever since PS21 first put down roots in Chatham in 2006, our mission and programming have reflected our commitment to the intertwined goals of environmental preservation and the need to live in harmony with nature.
