PS21 Residencies
About residencies at PS21
PS21’s dynamic Pavilion and Black Box Theaters, Dance Barn, and artists’ housing are ideally suited to short- and long-term residencies year-round. Artists in residence develop their complex ideas, projects, and collaborative work while living in our spacious 11-bed guesthouse on PS21’s peaceful, rambling grounds. The Black Box theater’s flexible configuration is designed for intimately-scaled productions and the incubation of novel creative approaches and concepts. The flexible floor plan, state-of-the-art LED lighting, sophisticated sound system, green room, dressing rooms, kitchen, and convenient artists’ housing have established PS21 as a sought-after venue for residencies by music, theater, and dance solo performers and ensembles.
Since we welcomed its first resident artists in 2014, the program has expanded to artist-participants in our innovative Movement Without Borders program—among them, David Neumann, Michelle Boule, Grace Osborne, Miguel Guitterez, and Edisa Weeks, whose workshop, “Exploring the Personal and Political,” mined personal memories and political events as source material for dance. More recently, choreographers, composers, musicians, playwright-directors and actors have developed new pieces for performance at PS21 and elsewhere, including Camille A. Brown & Dancers, who developed Queens, a new choreographic work, and reimagined her Great Migration meditation Matchstick (2008), and Heartbeat Opera, who refined The Extinctionist, the company’s first original opera, which premiered in a concert version in our Pavilion Theater.
PS21’s support for artists in residence encompasses the use of our resources, including our theater, dance barn, and landscape, technical and administrative services, and the opportunity to present work-in-progress showings. Resident artists are essential to realizing key elements of our mission: fostering creativity; encouraging collaboration among artists who work at the intersections of dance, theater, film, video, sound, and performing arts; and connecting us with the ever-evolving national and international arts landscape.
